I say they should leave the employee's alone as the kids know who the Janitor is and knows they are safe. You bring in an outside company paying a Janitor $3 less an hr. guessing they are good people and find out otherwise then what are your going to do?

Leave them alone all it is,is a way to save a buck when bussing should be the issue to school.

CUT IT Services and get back to the books!

There has to be other ways to cut back on costs.

Ken- good point. The janitors do know the kids and the kids know them. THey are part of keeping the school safe, in my opinion. It's not just cleaning they do- they fix things around the building, or make sure they are repaired.
Outside sources are just that- outside and they are not invested to the school, it's just a place on their route.

I agree, leave the janitors in the schools as we have them. I talked to my grown kids and siblings about this and everyone of us could remember the janitors at the school. We couldn't remember every teacher we had. They play an important part in our school's, and I say keep them there.

Having a head custodian in the family it makes me sad that they would out-source such a job. It does make me happy to see that what I thought was a thankless and unappreciated job is appreciated by some of our readers. The job is alot more than cleaning up after kids. The safety and health of the children is important to them. They take pride in their school and "their" kids as they say. I for one would not like a "stranger" custodian around my children.

I agree Shawna. Plus, I don't see where outsoucing to a company would keep a custodian in the school all day. That wouldn't be cheaper. Leave well enough alone. We love the custodians, and they are family and they love the kids and the kids love them.

The realistic question is "Why" the outsourced provider is able to do the same job for less money!

The only thing I can think of is they won't work as many hours a day, probably come in clean and leave, (not doing the job the custodians do now)and probably pay their people a very low amount of money per hour. I once worked for a company that cleaned offices, and we just did the basic cleaning, trash, sweep, mop, vacuum, etc. Nowhere near what the janitors in the schools do. Plus we were paid just a little over minimum wage. Most of us were part time so they didn't have to pay us benefits. I would like for someone from Piper to tell us just what this outsourced company will do. Will they be in the schools all day, etc.

They don't just clean...the custodians I know do the landscaping, and all the maintenance of the commercial HVAC machinery, minor plumbing, stripping and waxing of floors. Not to mention set up and breakdown for the many functions and or sports events. They are responsible for securing the building (keyholders). I am not sure what Piper schools require of their custodians, but I know the Shawnee Mission School district makes them do just about everything.
