From The Pallet: Wheat State Pizza a treasure on Strawberry Hill

By BOB WINNER

OK, there’s a pizza shop in Historic Strawberry Hill of Kansas.

You have got to be kidding, as I told a good friend of mine.

As long as I can remember, Strawberry Hill was known for the best Croatian food, as it is legendary world over.  To put a pizza shop – in such a historic neighborhood – how weird I thought.

To my surprise, was I ever so wrong.

The place I am talking about is Wheat State Pizza, located at 5th and Barnett on the corner. They first started out in Lawrence, Kan., with locations all over eastern Kansas, even in such small rural communities as Paola, Kan.

Their menu is nothing like I have ever found before, as they have pizza made with whole-wheat crust. The toppings – such as cream cheese and green olives – are not found anywhere else.

The prices for the most part are very reasonable.

A lot of people have told me about Wheat State Pizza before, but it wasn't until recently I had the time to give it a try.

When you enter Wheat State you will find a very warm, cozy and clean atmosphere.

As you look towards the back wall you see a painting of a person tossing a pizza with the background as a wheat field. This was very interesting to say the least.
While standing at the counter, Mike and I decided to order their farmer pizza, which came with hamburger, sausage, black olives, green peppers and red onions….all on a whole-wheat crust.

Milia, on the other hand, decided to order the Mediation, which came with cream cheese, green olives and sun dried tomatoes.

The owner told me they get a lot of people from the Unified Government during lunch and are packed to the walls, making it a popular spot for the downtown lunch crowd.
When we got our pizza, we all were highly impressed. This was some of the best pizza, we all agreed.

It was nothing that I have ever experienced before. It was a taste was out of this world, something that you won't find anywhere else.

Unlike a lot of pizza shops I have tried in the past, Wheat State Pizza is in a class by itself. They offer some of the most unique toppings ever.  Both Michael, Milia and I agree this place is a true undiscovered treasure in Wyandotte County.
If you haven't tried Wheat State pizza you must.

If you enjoy pizza, this place is four stars hands down.  For the money and overall quality, Wheat State Pizza is second to none.

You must discover this treasure for yourself.

They are located on the corner of 5th and Barnett in downtown Kansas City Kansas. Visit their web site www.wheatstatepizza.com  for more information.
